Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Deener
Recruiting & Retention Commander

 

Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Deener has had broad experience across multiple domains
during his military career with the Maryland Army National Guard. After initial service as an infantry platoon leader and deployment as a Plans Officer with the 58th Infantry Brigade
Combat Team from 2007-2008, he commanded a recruiting task force, was the S1 for the 58th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade and served as the Executive Officer for the 581st Troop Command Battalion. He was the division chief for the Officer Personnel Management section within the Directorate of Personnel (G1) for the Maryland ArmyNational Guard. Before his current assignment he was G5, Plans and Policy. He has completed Phase 3 of the Common Core of Intermediate Level Education.

 

 

Command Sergeant Major Kenneth T. Klein
Recruiting & Retention CSM

CSM Klein enlisted into the active Army in 1989.  He attended basic training at Fort Knox, KY, and AIT at Fort Lee, VA.  Upon completion of AIT, CSM Klein was stationed at Fort Bragg NC with Company A, 1-159th AVN Regt, as a Supply Specialist.  CSM Klein served at Fort Bragg from 1990-1992, and had one deployment for Operation Desert Shield / Desert Storm.  CSM Klein left the active Army, and joined the Maryland Army National Guard where he was assigned to A Company 1-115th Infantry where he held the following positions: Rifleman, Grenadier, M249 Gunner, M60 Gunner, Team Leader, Squad Leader, and Platoon Sergeant. 

CSM Klein served with A Company from 1992-2004, and had one deployment for Operation Noble Eagle.  CSM Klein began his AGR tour in 2004 with the Recruiting and Retention Battalion as a production recruiter, working out of the Frederick Armory on team West.  During his time with the Recruiting and Retention Battalion, CSM Klein has held the following positions: Production Recruiter 2004-2007, NCOIC 2008-2011, Company 1SG 2011-2013, Operations SGM 2013- 2017.  CSM Klein also deployed with A Company 1-175th Infantry for Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2007-2008 during his time with the Recruiting and Retention Battalion. 

CSM Klein has attended all levels of the Noncommissioned Officers Education System, including the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy, graduating in September 2016.  He has also completed the following, the First Sergeants Course, RSP Cadre Course, 79T NCOIC Course, MEPS Guidance Counselor Course, 79T ANCOC, 11B BNCOC, PLDC.

CSM Klein’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (1OLC),  Army Commendation Medal (1OLC), Army Achievement Medal (6OLC), Army Good Conduct Medal (4th award), Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal (4OLC), National Defense Service Medal (2nd award), Southwest Asia Service Medal with two bronze stars, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal (Silver Hourglass, M-Device), NCO Professional Development Ribbon (with numeral 4), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (3rd award), Army Reserve Overseas Training Ribbon, Kuwait Liberation Medal (Saudi Arabia), Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait), Maryland State Active Duty Medal, Maryland Outstanding Unit Ribbon, Maryland National Guard Adjutant General’s Distinguished Unit Ribbon, Maryland National Guard State Service Medal (One Silver Bottony), Expert Infantryman Badge, Parachutist Badge, Master Recruiter Badge, Driver-Mechanic Badge with Driver-W Clasp, Order of Saint Maurice – Centurion Medal.

CSM Klein is married to Margaret Klein. They have one child, Courtney who is 12, and live in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.  CSM Klein also has two other children Jessica 21, and Hunter 18, both currently attending college.
